Pole with severe internal decay
performed. If the internal condition of the pole below ground is in question, a bore sample can be taken to determine the extent of internal decay.
A pole that has been stubbed either with a steel truss or wooden stub has been stubbed because the pole has shown signs of decay in a previous inspection. Extreme caution must
be exercised when work is to be performed on a stubbed pole. If there is any doubt the pole may not handle a change in stress, take any means necessary to secure the pole before climbing.
A common mistake among
employees is to focus so much
attention on the pole to be climbed
that they overlook or miss other
hazards associated with the
structure. The goal is to prevent
the fall, but if the employee fell
o the pole, where would he/she
land? Asking this question during the hazard analysis helps to identify sharp protruding objects like stakes, fence posts, material for the work project, etc.
