3. Jitter
Jitter is the variation in packet delay.
In real-time applications, packets should arrive at consistent intervals.
High jitter causes poor audio or video quality.
Packet loss occurs when data packets fail to reach their destination.
High packet loss results in:
• Missing audio
• Broken video
• Slow data transfer
4️ QoS Mechanisms (Techniques) Networks use several mechanisms to provide QoS.
1. Traffic Classification
Network traffic is identified and categorized into different types such as:
• Voice traffic
• Video traffic
• Data traffic
2.12.2 Traffic Prioritization
Important traffic is given higher priority.
• Voice packets → high priority
• Email or file downloads → lower priority
2.12.3 Traffic Shaping
Traffic shaping controls the rate at which packets are sent to avoid congestion.
2.12.4 Traffic Policing
Traffic policing limits traffic that exceeds the allowed rate.
Packets exceeding the limit may be dropped.
