she raised her right arm, revealing the watch.
“Antique. Dad left me his collection. Old watches from
the 1900s.” A sly smile spread across her face as she
added, "My stepbrothers weren't happy, but hey, now I
have time on my hands."
With a clattering of glasses, three hotel employees
rolled up carts beside us. Two more arrived with tables
on a dolly. There was a flurry of tablecloths and water
jugs. A guy with a badge came over to move us on.
Julia thrust the money at me. There was no way I
was going to take it. She flashed a huge smile at the
man with the badge. “Viva Las Vegas,” she said then
aimed her smile at me. “Take the money. You’re going
to earn it.”
On the far side of the hall, a line of sofas faced each
other, separated by low glass tables. “Ok.” I said.
“How about 5:30 right over there?”
“Uh-uh.” She waved it off impatiently. “I’ll pick you
up outside the front door. Two hours.”
