The Surprising Truth About Lying
Henry ducked under a stretch of caution tape and
blended into the confusion, his quiet observer status
keeping him unnoticed.
He got close enough to see the rescue workers
pulling people out of the tilted carriage. Most were just
stunned, covered in soot. But then he saw the man.
The man was lying on a gurney being wheeled
quickly away toward an ambulance. His face was pale
and slick with sweat, his clothes torn, and a heavy
piece of shrapnel was still stuck deep in his shoulder.
The paramedics worked fast, but the man’s eyes were
open, wide with shock, fixed on nothing. Henry stood
four feet away as they lifted the gurney into the
ambulance.
This wasn't a data point. This wasn't a panic curve.
This was the cost, delivered fresh.
Before the ambulance door could close, a polished,
immaculate black SUV squealed to a halt nearby. Out
stepped a woman in a perfectly tailored suit, the city’s
Director of Public Safety, flanked by two stone-faced
bodyguards. Right behind her, a news van pulled up,
its satellite dish telescoping, ready to broadcast.
