have been restored. We ask for courage, not panic.”
Courage, not panic. The Director used the word
with the same cynical detachment that Henry had used
"Project Chimera." But hers was a hollow echo, the
language of control, not hope.
Henry finally moved. He walked away from the
camera, away from the Director's smooth, empty
performance. He walked until he reached the
ambulance entrance of the closest hospital.
He found the man from the gurney in the
emergency room waiting area. He was patched up,
sitting on a plastic chair, shivering, waiting for
someone to call his family.
Henry walked up to him and sat down in the next
chair. The man, mid-forties, heavy-set, looked like he
worked a shift job. He didn't look up.
“Tough night,” Henry said softly.
The man nodded, staring at the floor. “They’re
saying it was a relay switch. A standard mechanical
failure.”
“That’s what they said on the news.”
