Prologue:
The Dangerous Prayer
We always claimed we wanted the truth.
It was the oldest prayer in human history. We
demanded it from our politicians on the evening news.
We begged for it in the quiet, desperate moments of
our relationships. We felt the need for it grinding
against us every day, staring at the simple, ugly reality:
half the bosses are crooks, the government is a racket,
the markets are a house of cards, and the planet is
dying a slow, expensive death.
For years, we asked the same furious questions.
“How do they get away with it?”
How can a politician stand on a podium promising
tax cuts when the budget reports prove, with 94%
certainty, that he’s a liar? How can a company sell you
medicine that barely works, burying the deadly details
deep in a technical appendix they know you’ll never
read?
