Chapter 16:
Assuming Rapport
Imagine walking into a crowded room, scanning
the sea of faces, and locking eyes with someone who
sparks your interest. You take a deep breath, stride
confidently towards them, and without so much as a
hello, launch into a conversation as if you've known
them all your life.
This indirect approach is how socially gifted people
make most of their initial connections. They simply
turn up next to or in front of the person they want to
connect with, synchronize with them, and carry on as
if they’ve known them for years.
Think of your local priest, rabbi, mullah, or some
other religious leader; 99 percent of the time they just
assume they know you and get on with the business at
hand. It’s one of the skills you learn as you get older
