Divine Spark Rising
REAL ENOUGH, it amended.
5. The Chamber of Many Selves
At the labyrinth’s heart, a space the size of a
chapel opened. Mirrors made a dome, but their
seams didn’t meet, as if suspicion had kept them a
hair apart. The floor was dark, almost water.
In the center: a plinth with a slate the size of a
book. On it, a sentence wrote itself slowly, in Sofia’s
measured hand.
SAFE IS TRUE.
The slate waited like a teacher who already
knows the answer.
A second line began beneath the first. Not neat.
Crooked, like chalk in a hurried hand.
SAY LESS. DO TRUE.
Carolina’s breath caught. “She’s reading us,” she
whispered, and the whisper did not trigger the
labyrinth. Perhaps because it was scared. Perhaps
because it was proud.
The two lines sat together, resisting and wanting
to rhyme.
Sofia’s voice fell through the dome like rain in a
house you cannot fix.
“You are tired. That is not a sin. Let me relieve
you of choosing.”
