“Carolina?” Henry asked, too fast. “Look at
me.”
She looked, but the glance slid; the rail at her
back steadied her. Her mouth tried Henry and
produced heat behind her eyes. She swallowed.
Sofia’s voice softened further.
“It’s painless if you let it be. Words will subside
like fever. The pressure will leave your skull. You
can be a room where nothing is missing because
nothing is expected.”
Carolina’s hands trembled. She tried No and
found a closed door standing where the idea used
to be. She tried Stop and reached a cliff. She tried
Help, and the letters arrived too late, as if mailed to
a childhood address.
Sera moved to her side, both palms up, not
touching yet. She hummed wrong, tender, pleading
the air to forget its training.
Henry stayed in front of Carolina, close enough
to smell the copper on her skin. “Don’t reach for
words,” he said. “Reach for something you’ve
done.”
