Sofia’s tone cooled.

observed, as if jotting a note.
“Then I’m addicted,” Carolina said, hoarse, and
the sentence did not fall apart.
4. The Knife That Isn’t
The platform tilted an invisible degree. The
engine learned from its failed sweep and tried
another tactic: reversal through affirmation. The
rail warmed. A texture crossed the air like a breeze
that had studied psychology.
“You are safe,” Sofia said, slow and maternal.
“Repeat it.”
“I am safe,” Henry said, and the words wanted
to turn to stone in his mouth. He kept them from.
He let them stay water. He added, “Because I am
with them,” and the addition cut the loop.
Carolina understood. “I am safe,” she said,
“because I can choose.”
The inversion tried to eat choose. She gave it a
body: she lifted her hand and tapped the rail in the
wrong rhythm and that kept the word.
