“But it’s not just heart. It’s vagal tone modulated
with micro-muscle firings — she’s encoding
meaning through body rhythm.”
Sera opened her eyes and shook her head
slightly. “Not meaning,” she said softly.
“Choosing.”
She shifted the pattern. Her breath followed but
did not lead. The platform vibrated back, then got
confused. The tower’s flow hit the new cadence
and stumbled. A line of light on the cylinder
flickered, then copied her for a beat before
remembering to resist.
Henry stared, transfixed. “Why can’t the Mirror
catch it?”
“Because it’s alive right now,” Carolina said,
eyes wide. “It only exists as long as she is making
it. There’s nothing to store. It dies and is born at the
same time.”
Sera smiled. “Like truth.”
She moved her fingertips against the rail — tiny
presses. The pattern shifted again, a new stanza.
Carolina lifted her own hand to the rail, closed her
eyes, and tried to feel the grammar through bone.
Henry did the same, skeptical and willing at once.
The rhythm passed hand to hand, body to body,
faulted, corrected, improved. The engine fought
