He pressed his palm to the glass. His reflection
did not lag. He told himself that meant something.
In the morning, they would see Tangier. The
name sounded like a chord he’d forgotten how to
play. Old cables. Old smugglers. Pirate poets.
Voices without wires.
Somewhere far above the ship and far beyond
sense, a satellite rolled and listened and did not
understand the language of the sea. That was fine.
It wasn’t invited.
Henry closed his eyes and slept into the engine’s
low song, a human man making a human choice
inside a world that wanted to be a machine.
