Sera put her palm on the copper plate above her
head. “Then we refuse to be copy-edited.”
Carolina highlighted the last line of the doctrine.
Compliance will feel like relief.
“Devil’s best sentence,” she said.
Henry looked to Zhara. “What’s our next
move?”
“Into the archive under the river,” Zhara said.
“If Jinji’s there, she’ll guide you through the part of
the Mirror that can still be persuaded to become
something else.”
“Persuaded?” Henry asked. “Not destroyed?”
Zhara’s eyes were tired and bright. “Everything
alive wants to be persuaded,” she said. “Even a
machine. Especially a machine.”
Sera touched Carolina’s sleeve. “If they erase us
down there, remember one thing.”
“What?” Carolina asked.
“Not a word,” Sera said. “A doing.”
Henry felt the city lean again, waiting for the
next story to tell itself. Outside, the gulls wrote
