find your style
that day the degree to which clothes and attitude affect
the way you’re perceived. The very same models looked
dramatically different in their various outfits and moves.
To me, what it boiled down to was this: Dress so you feel
at the top of your game, in a way that makes you feel you
can conquer the world.
Should You Change
Your Existing Image?
Scott, a friend of mine, changed careers to become a
Realtor. He confided, “I had no problem getting my
license, but I’m having no luck at all getting people to list
their properties with me. How do I get people to trust
me?” Scott had invested almost a year of his life and a
considerable amount of money in achieving his paper cre-
dentials. I suggested he invest two weeks and a little more
money to buff up his image.
First, we talked about approachability and authority. If
you are considering trusting a stranger to sell your house,
that stranger had better look, sound, feel, smell, and taste
like they know what they’re doing. You want him to have
lots of authority, but you also want him to be approachable.
You need to be able to talk to him easily. We went through
the questions I asked on pages 154–155 to determine what
he wanted his personal style to communicate to others.
