getting a conversation going with the junior staff, and
he knows that if he wants to continue to be successful,
he had better connect. One of his friends told him about
the technique of answering a question with a question to
break through with people you don’t have that much in
common with.
George has called an informal session with two of his
staffers to figure out where to hold the company’s next
retreat.
“We should keep it nearer to town this year, George,
don’t you reckon?” said Dale, a self-important-looking
twenty-five-year-old.
“How about the Lancaster?” asked George. The
Lancaster had recently been transformed from a jaded
old downtown flophouse into a snazzy boutique hotel.
“It’s all right, but do you think it can handle three hun-
dred and fifty?” said Jackie, who lives right around the
corner from the Lancaster and would be much happier
with three days at a country retreat.
“What’s the best way to find out?” George replied.
“We can go by to check it out,” Dale suggested.
“Any thoughts about doing it in September again?”
George asked.
“September is all about being in the country,” said
Jackie. “What about going to the Boulders? It’ll be just like
the good old days.”
