convince them in 90 seconds or less
aim to take thirty seconds of the person’s time. You can
send a note, an e-mail, or leave a phone message. My
advice is to leave an after-hours voice message—it shows
you don’t want to interrupt the working day and that you
are genuinely interested. Voice tone and word content
are vital. Adjust your attitude before you make the call
and make it standing up. Be enthusiastic and courteous.
Say thank you for the interview, be enthusiastic about the
position, and keep your ten-second commercial in mind
as you reinforce some positive aspect of the interview. If
you choose a written reply, make sure your grammar and
spelling are perfect.
Whatever format you choose, customize your message,
practice, and keep this important self-marketing sales tool
as close to thirty seconds as you can.
Schmoozing in the Phone Zone
When you’re on the phone, you may have a great con-
nection, but you have to be sure that you’re making
a great connection. There’s no body language for you to
read. Your only clues to what your conversational part-
ner is thinking or feeling are his words and tone of voice.
That’s all he has to read you, too. So you must be vigilant
about both how you sound and how you’re expressing
yourself.
