yeah, even in her pots, those annoying weeds were
sneaking in. Pulling weeds wasn't exactly fun or fancy,
but there was something really satisfying about it. It
was like you were actually in charge of making things
neat and tidy in a private world that could slip out of
control.
It all began with something she read online. It
talked about how even small-scale gardening, like
tending to pots on a balcony or windowsill, could have
a big impact on your brain. Something about the way
different senses – the smell of the earth, the feel of the
leaves, the sight of the growing plants all worked
together to calm your mind. It wasn't about becoming
some expert botanist; it was just about connecting
with something real and alive. A little green escape.
A ladybug with its bright red and black shell
landed right on a basil leaf. Billie watched it slowly
walk along. It made her think that even in the middle
of the busy city, life finds a way to hang on.
For the next half hour, Billie just hung out with her
plants. She gave them water, talking to them softly
like you would a pet, as the dry soil soaked it up. She
gently snapped off the dead flowers, like she was
