DEEP REST
A memory. A fragment from Mallory’s notes. A
diagram of the facility’s original power grid. An old,
vulnerable junction box.
She couldn't speak. She couldn't move. But she
could push. A silent, internal signal. A reinforcement
of Liam’s intuition.
The Director. The Desperation.
The Director watched in horror as Vega reached
the junction box. "Stop him! Don't let him touch that
panel!" he yelled at his remaining operatives.
But they were too slow. The drone was focused on
Vega, its optical sensors locked on him.
Vega ripped open the panel, exposing a tangle of
thick, colored wires. He grabbed two of them, thick as
his thumb, and slammed them together.
A blinding flash of light. A deafening CRACK!
The entire chamber plunged into darkness. The
drone’s roar died. Its red optical sensors went black. It
shuddered, then collapsed, a lifeless heap of metal.
The alarm system, which had been blaring, went
silent. The hum of the facility died.
Complete, oppressive silence.
"What have you done?" The Director shrieked.
"Power's out," Vega said, his voice calm in the
sudden darkness. He pulled out a tactical flashlight, its
