NICHOLAS BOOTHMAN
"We have to go!" Vega yelled, his voice strained
over the roar of the water. "The whole place is going
to flood!"
He grabbed the gurney and pushed it through the
rising water.
They heard the Director’s enraged shouts, the
panicked cries of his operatives, lost in the flooded,
blacked-out labyrinth.
They reached the service tunnel, the one Liam had
identified earlier. It was steep, slick with water, but it
led upwards. To freedom.
They pushed, they pulled, they dragged the gurney
up the incline, the water rising around them,
threatening to sweep them away.
Finally, a glimmer of light. The exit.
They burst out of the tunnel, gasping for breath,
into the cold, clear night air. The stars glittered above
them. The mountains loomed, silent witnesses.
The facility, once a beacon of cold, clinical power,
was now a dark, silent tomb, slowly filling with water.
They had done it. They had escaped. They had
exposed them.
Liam looked at Evelyn, her life hanging by a
thread. He touched her face, his fingers trembling.
"We're free, Evelyn," he said, tears stinging his
eyes. "We're free."
