DEEP REST
Chapter 4:
The First Patient
The Apartment.
Evelyn's apartment, usually her sanctuary of quiet
order, now felt like a fortress under siege. Every creak
of the floorboards, every distant siren, every rustle of
leaves outside her window sent a shot of adrenaline
through her. The shadow in the lab parking lot, the
glint of a lens – it wasn't her imagination. It was real.
She spent the night awake, pacing, clutching the
book, the EEG data from her self-experiment glowing
on her tablet. The numbers were undeniable. The
patterns, irrefutable. Deep Rest was real. And that
made her a threat.
She had drawn the blinds, locked the deadbolts,
even pushed a heavy armchair against the front door, a
futile gesture against an unseen enemy. Her mind,
though clearer than it had been in months, was now a
battlefield of scientific triumph and primal fear.
