"Dr. Hayes," he said, his voice a calm, modulated
baritone. It was the voice Liam had described: a
hypnotic drone. "A pleasure to finally meet you,
though I regret the circumstances."
Evelyn glared at him, defiance warring with the
lingering weakness. "Where am I? What do you
want?"
"You are in a… secure facility," The Director
replied, his gaze sweeping the sterile room. "And what
we want, Doctor, is quite simple. The truth. And your
cooperation."
"The truth is out there," Evelyn countered, her
voice raspy. "Liam knows. He'll tell the world."
The Director’s smile widened. "Mr. O'Connell
is… a variable. A minor inconvenience. He's also a
man who has just experienced a psychological shift,
under duress. His testimony will be easily dismissed
as the ramblings of a traumatized individual."
Evelyn felt a fresh wave of despair. He was right.
Liam’s credibility would be zero.
"You won't get away with this," she said, her voice
trembling with impotent rage.
"Oh, but we already have, Doctor," The Director
said, his tone conversational, as if discussing the
weather. "For over a century, in fact. Dr. Finch was…
