DEEP REST
"Understood."
The Director leaned back in his chair. Hayes was
contained. The book was secured. The data was hers,
but the knowledge was now theirs. They would extract
it, piece by agonizing piece, if necessary.
O'Connell was a nuisance. A loose end. But he
would be found. And when he was, his "visions"
would be easily discredited. A man suffering from a
severe depressive episode, now experiencing acute
paranoia and delusions. A tragic case.
He looked at Evelyn’s image on the screen. She
was struggling against the lab-coated figures, her face
a mask of defiance.
"You have no idea, Dr. Hayes," he murmured to
the silent screen. "The power you have stumbled
upon. It is far too dangerous for the uninitiated. Far
too valuable to be left to chance."
He closed his eyes for a moment, picturing the
sprawling, hidden facility in the Rockies. The heart of
Helix Pharma. The future of mental health, controlled,
managed, and monetized.
Somnus Profundus. A beautiful concept. A
dangerous one. But soon, it would be theirs. Fully.
Completely.
