The Descent
The Silence.
It wasn't the kind of silence that brought peace.
No, this was the silence of a tomb. A silence that
swallowed you up.
Dr. Evelyn Hayes knew silence.
As a neuropsychologist, she’d spent years
dissecting the turmoil of the human mind, then trying
to restore a semblance of quiet to the fractured inner
worlds of her patients. But nothing had prepared her
for this.
The silence of Mallory’s room.
Two months. It had been two months since the
world had tilted on its axis, since the phone call that
had ripped through her, since the flat, clinical voice of
the dispatcher had uttered words that still echoed like
a phantom limb: “We regret to inform you…”
