“Come," he said.
It’s only 11:15, but Cousin Bernard whisked me off to
the bar on the top floor of the Sheraton for a very long,
boozy lunch. For starters, Cousin Bernard, a very
passionate Canadian, had me down a "Red Beer," beer
with tomato juice, and a "Bull Shot," vodka with beef
stock and Tabasco. We ate, drank red wine, and planned
until five, when he staggered off to catch the commuter
train home.
The next day was dedicated to parading me and my
portfolio around Eaton’s art department. Cousin
Bernard must have had some sway there because I got
my first full-day shoot the following Tuesday. We shot
cruise wear. Two full pages in black and white for the
back pages of all the national newspapers.
My pictures cause a small scandal.
Around Europe, I'd been shooting extreme high-
fashion with a twist of shock value; why not? It worked.
But very conservative Canada wasn't quite ready for my
style. My very first full-page newspaper ad caused a
scandal. By 10 a.m., Eaton's closed its PR department
