courtyard. It was two couples from Toronto. They were
completely lost—this was back before you could just use
your phone for directions. We turned the lights back on
and gave them a quick tour.
They were really thankful, so we invited them to stay
for a glass of wine. So we're all sitting around talking,
and I could just tell one of the women was important. It
turns out she was the president of a major Canadian
publishing company. The actual president. In our house,
just because they got lost. I mean, was that fate or just
amazing good luck?
Before saying goodbye, this gracious lady extended
an invitation for me to visit her office the following week.
There, she offered invaluable advice, urging me to seek
representation from an agent in New York. With her
guidance and a stroke of luck, I embarked on a journey
that led me to a six-figure advance from a major
American publishing house a mere three weeks later.
At first, these surprise twists and turns are mind-
blowing. It's like fireworks going off, painting your life in
all sorts of colors that make you stop and think, "Wow,
anything can happen." Every chance connection and
fortunate coincidence feels like fate giving you a nudge,
showing you how much potential there is in your life.
But as time goes on, you start getting used to this
