Chapter 29
Street-Smarts and
Common Sense
Growing up, I had this friend called Bill. He had this
gift that I could only dream of – he could talk to anyone,
anywhere, anytime. He could strike up a conversation
with a teacher, a shopkeeper, or even a stranger on the
street, and somehow, he’d always manage to leave a
lasting impression. It was as if he had a magic formula, a
secret ingredient that made people want to listen to him,
to like him, and to remember him.
As I watched Bill, I'd try and work out how he did it.
Was it the way he listened intently to others, making
them feel heard and understood? Was it the way he told
stories, weaving intricate tales that captivated his
audience? Or was it just the way he stood, or sat?
Whatever it was, I knew I wanted some of it. I
wanted to be like Bill—a right little charmer.
But, it doesn't work that way.
