 The Truth About Lying
Two words.
Thank you.
After weeks of accusations, lawsuits, hearings, death threats, and grief, the simple gratitude of a child felt almost unbearable.
“How are you feeling?” he asked.
“Tired. But better. The doctors say I get to go home soon.”
“That’s good.”
“Mom says some people are mad at you.”
Henry nodded.
“Some people are.”
“Because of the truth thing?”
“Yes.”
Aimee frowned with the seriousness of a child trying to be fair.
“But truth is good, right?”
Henry looked at her mother.
Her mother looked away.
“That’s what grown-ups say,” Aimee added. “The truth will set you free.”
Henry thought of the Martinez girl in the Quiet Zone.
No records. No insulin. No name spoken aloud because names had become dangerous.
He thought of Aimee, alive because the system had found a buried match.
