 The Truth About Lying
“You were right about the tiered system,” she said to him. “I was so busy trying to build something perfect, I forgot to build something human.”
Vincent stood up again, but this time his voice was softer.
“I have been praying for guidance. Asking God what faith means in the face of extinction. And I think... I think I have been confusing faith with rigidity.”
He held up his wooden cross.
“This represents sacrifice. Christ died rather than compromise his principles. And I have been telling myself we should do the same, that choosing Graduation and failing would be more righteous than choosing Extraction and surviving.”
“But that is not faith. That is pride. Faith is not refusing to act because the action is not pure enough. Faith is doing the best you can with what you have and trusting that grace will cover the gap.”
He looked at Logan.
“Your daughter deserves to grow up. So does every other child on this planet. And if we choose Extraction, we are telling ninety percent of them that they do not matter. That is not a choice I can live with. That is not a choice I can ask God to bless.”
He turned to the room.
“So we build the best system we can. Not perfect. Human. Strong enough to prevent tyranny. Flexible enough to allow mercy.”
