Henry answered without hesitation. “Everyone. No exceptions.”
“Even us?”
“Especially us.”
They ate in the main hall. Around them, people talked, laughed, shared stories. Some were true. Some weren’t. Some lived in between.
All of them held something together.
Henry watched it all and felt the weight of what he was about to break.
Later, Vincent led him into a small chapel.
Candlelight flickered against bare wood. The air was still. “I left the priesthood six years ago,” Vincent said.
Henry sat beside him. “Why?”
“Because I couldn’t keep lying.”
“I told people their suffering had meaning. That God had a plan. That faith would make things right. I didn’t believe it anymore.”
“So you stopped believing in God?” “I stopped pretending I understood.
