They were upholding the law, but they were driving
themselves insane with the effort.
Henry walked further toward the outskirts,
following reports Lina had pulled from the fringes of
the internet, rumors of places where people had found
a new, radical form of social defense. They called these
places Safe Zones.
He found the first one in an abandoned factory
complex five miles from downtown. The exterior was
marked by a crude, hand-painted sign: THE QUIET.
He approached the main gate. It wasn't guarded by
weapons, but by an absolute, profound lack of
response. No one challenged him; no one welcomed
him.
Henry stepped inside the cavernous, echoing
factory floor. It was dimly lit by scavenged battery
lamps. About fifty people were living there, organized
into small, highly localized domestic pods, separated
by makeshift screens of cardboard and hanging cloth.
