He had no idea what it meant. But questions got you noticed. Better to sound like a machine answering another machine.
He typed:
"Confirmed. Proceeding as instructed."
He didn’t ask who they were. He didn’t ask what the 72 hours meant. He gave them the answer they were expecting and hoped they would look elsewhere for a while.
He walked home through empty streets. The financial district was quiet—offices dark, restaurants closing early, the usual crowds gone. His phone buzzed every few minutes: emergency Fed meeting, congressional hearings, international coordination efforts.
At his apartment, he stood at the window and watched the city. Somewhere out there, Aimee Quinn was recovering from surgery, alive because the system worked. Somewhere else, millions of people were watching their savings evaporate because the system worked too well.
The truth was supposed to set people free. He hadn't considered that it might also freeze them in place.
