ROYÈRE CHANDELIER
An original mid C20th tubular steel chandelier (or lustre bouquet) attributed to Jean Royère, re-lacquered akin to other well documented examples, French, c.1950.
Jean Royère (1902-1981) studied the classics at Cambridge University and initially worked as a banker before embarking upon a career as a decorator in 1931, initially working for a furniture manufacturer in Paris. In 1942 he set up his own studio and would soon come to be regarded as a ‘Grand Master’ of decorating following his redesign of the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs Elysées in Paris, which met with immediate success. He later received prominent commissions abroad including the residences of King Farouk of Egypt, King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran. Royère became a key figure of the Avant-Garde by pioneering a highly original style that combined bright colours and organic forms; his work has since become extremely collectable.
