CHAPTER 11 - THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY AND SOUTH AFRICA
It all goes to show that if you give consumers a product they want and offer them the right level of service it works. Sadly, we in the insurance industry are still struggling to come to terms with these concepts and deliver simple solutions to our customers.
One later major upgrade of the Home Plus policy, which is worth repeating here, was when we introduced the Householders All Risks policy. This was the size of a cheque-book and only had four pages plus the schedule. The only exclusions were war, riot, terrorism etcetera; the generic exclusions you find in all policies. The premium was 50% more than the standard premium and there was an excess to get rid of the minor claims.
Notwithstanding the higher premium this policy took off and eventually became 70% to 80% of our household insurance business. It was the easiest policy in the world for the claims department to manage and disputes were almost non-existent - a far cry from today.
We were continually on the path of innovation. In September 1984 for example we introduced the Car Plus policy. As we said at the time ‘we have produced our first ever plain language policy which has cut the wording for our standard motor policy from six pages of fine print to two pages of large print.
In the same era, Aegis launched its first Asset Plus policies which were the precursor to what we all know today as ISR ( Industrial Special Risks insurance).
