CHAPTER 18 - INDUSTRY AFFAIRS, ICA AND MY BOARD CAREER TAKES OFF
Those matters in which I take the greatest pride were all to do with looking after the interests of consumers and enhancing the industry’s image.
Every year we produced a “Future Directions” plan. (My approach to planning was just the same as it had been in NWIA and earlier.) In 1993 the Future Directions Plan added to ICA’s Mission and Key Objectives. The then Review had concluded that ICA should:
• take a greater role in fostering self-regulatory initiatives including developing and administering codes of practice dealing with a variety of situations.
• add Consumer Services and Issues Management to its three fundamental functions of Lobby, Public Affairs and Industry Forum.
1993 saw:
• a continuing focus on privatisation of compulsory classes of insurance in all states;
• changes to the Claims Review Panel, which followed on from the work of my predecessor Grahme Bond. (I have written about the CRP, which became IEC and eventually FOS a little later)
• the introduction of an industry image advertising campaign; and
• the development of an industry Code of Practice including for agents,( which also warrants a chapter of its own.)
I must say during my period, I enjoyed meeting politicians and negotiating a number of important matters such as the setting up of the eventual Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) in 2008. In addition, I was also involved in the Code of Practice, although most of this was left to my successor, Alan Mason. Yes, you are right, this fellow just kept following me and also did a magnificent job during his stewardship at ICA.
