incumbents who would have different ideas and could move the Zoo forward, which did happen.
When I did retire from the Zoo in 1979 I received two letters, which I thought I would share. The first was from The Hon. Marie Tehan, MP the Minister for Conservation and Land Management who said:
“Dear Peter,
I am writing to express the government’s appreciation and thanks for the outstanding contribution you have made over the last eight years to the Zoological Board of Victoria and more recently the Zoological Parks and Gardens Board.
I am particularly appreciative of the role you played as Deputy Chair and supporting Patricia Feilman and now Don Hayward as successive chairs of the Zoo Board. I know that Don Hayward has found your knowledge and long experience of Zoo issues of great assistance.
I am also aware of your excellent work as the chair of the Board’s Finance and Audit and Personnel Policy and Remuneration Sub- Committees and I know that you have facilitated introductions to a wide range of contacts in the tourism industry and to major potential corporate sponsors.
I also found our recent conversation on alternative business structures for the Zoos to be very interesting and I commend the forward-looking attitude the Zoo Board is demonstrating.
I know that the Board will want to continue a close association with you over the coming years and wish you very well in your future endeavours.
Yours sincerely, Marie Tehan, MP “
