CHAPTER 3 - JOHANNESBURG TO DURBAN TO CAPE TOWN TO PORT ELIZABETH AND BACK TO JOHANNESBURG
Land Bank. We found he was living in the house behind us in Sunridge Park.
At the weekends we often towed the caravan to the beach where Daphne would to play with Peter and Debbie while I stayed in the caravan and worked. Over the years Daphne disliked the caravan, mainly because I had to clean it after each trip and she was pleased when we sold it and when the caravan went down the road.
Durban
Most the Branches, as I have already indicated, welcomed me with open arms, but there were a couple who decided to play tricks on me. I have never forgotten my period in Durban. I used to start work at the crack of dawn, which was unusual for some of the people, so I would arrive at the office somewhere around about 6.30am and I had to turn the lights on. Anyway, when I went into the Manager’s office there was what looked a human hand hanging out of the top drawer. This really startled me! How could anybody get in the top drawer, let alone have his hand or her hand outside the drawer?
What had happened was that one of the ladies who worked in the office had a deformity to her ankle and was contemplating an amputation below the knee and so that she could wear high heel shoes etc. The surgeon who was undertaking the operation sent her different body parts showing her how they could match the other leg or hand. She had shown this to one of the guys in the office who had put it in the drawer to give me a real fright, which he certainly succeeded in doing! By the way, she did have the operation and I met her years afterwards and she was walking normally. It was quite amazing to see the outcome.
