CHAPTER 3 - JOHANNESBURG TO DURBAN TO CAPE TOWN TO PORT ELIZABETH AND BACK TO JOHANNESBURG
were extremely good at underwriting mutuals (self-funding concepts) and I was keen on participating as an insurer. Don had already forged underwriting arrangements with Head Office given that, prior to him commencing his Brokerage, he also worked for L&G.
When I arrived in Cape Town, the person in charge of development was Keith Shaw and he was doing good business with the Chief Agents, but I wanted to break into the Broker market. I spent much of my time there developing this market. The Branch was successful and soon we started to take the lead which stood us in good stead.
Johannesburg again
I made a large number of friends during my time in the Cape, many of whom have become friends for life. Unfortunately my stay there was rather short lived because a new General Manager had arrived from the UK and he was Sandy Rawlinson.
Sandy did not get on with the then Deputy General Manager Dick Braun, who was a great friend of mine. Sandy just couldn’t take his sarcasm as well as his forcefulness. You had to do it Dick’s way or else. I remember phoning Dick one day and asking him how Sandy was getting on. He replied that most of his time was taken up learning to drive, as he did not drive when he was in the UK.
Sandy was something else, if you went into his office you would not find a single piece of paper on his desk and the only matter he was dealing with was on his writing pad. All the other papers were in his consoles which were always under lock and key.
After some months, Sandy phoned me and asked me whether I would like to come to Johannesburg as Assistant General Manager in charge of Sales and Marketing which I naturally accepted. So 1974 saw me back in Johannesburg navigating the stormy waters between Dick Braun and Sandy Rawlinson, who could not have been two more different people.
