CHAPTER 5 - PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Legal & General’s First Management Conference
Every year we would have a major conference inviting all those who made up the management and included senior staff as they also had a role to play in developing their own budgets, whether at Branch or Departmental level. This was followed with Branch Conferences including the then Rhodesia (Zambia and Zimbabwe). It was also catching on at Head Office and it wasn’t long before we had visitors from Head Office joining the band wagon.
During this period L&G started to become noted in the market and particularly in the Broker market. Shortly afterwards, we started writing and participating in major broking accounts.
There were many funny stories associated with Alan. He had the habit of parking in the basement in any space that he found available and on one occasion he parked in the General Manager ,Sandy Rawlinson’s bay. So Sandy placed his car behind him so he couldn’t get out and left a dirty note. When I told Sandy it was Alan, he somewhat forgave him but was most annoyed.
