Unacceptable Work Practice
Risk Control Solutions
• Operators are not trained, competent or don’t hold the required licences.
• Crane operators are able to access high risk areas.
• Safety supervision is not adequate for the tasks being performed, the hazards that exist and the skills of
the operators.
• Operators are trained, competent and hold the required licences.
• Exclusion zones are set up in high risk areas, such as foundries where molten metal is moved and where magnetic, vacuum and friction lifting equipment is used.
An example of a temporary exclusion zone.
• Appropriate safety supervision is provided for all crane operations.
• All malfunctions and hazards are recorded in the log book and repaired.
• Unsafe bridge and gantry cranes are appropriately disabled, tagged out, electrically isolated and
not operated.
• The load is in full view (line of sight) of the operator at all times.
• Sufficient competent and appropriately licensed personnel are available to assist the operator where required.
• Bridge and gantry cranes are operated within their limits.
