FIGURE 13.2 Sample Letter to Families
Dear Family Members:
This year we are taking part in a new, exciting way to learn social studies. Our units of study will include . In each of the units, we will emphasize the connections between what is learned in school with students’ lives out of school. Our hope is to have students who are more excited and motivated to learn about the world within their reach and far away.
As family members, you will be asked to contribute your knowledge and experiences in this area as well. Some home assignments might include such things as collecting pictures, watching the news or a specified television program with your child and discussing some particular ques- tions, responding to questions regarding your experience of an event in history, or facilitating the gathering of objects or observable examples that reflect a key idea.
The intent is that your family responses will be returned to school so that our class conver- sations can be expanded and that overall social studies will be more memorable. I appreciate your cooperation and welcome any questions you may have.
