Chapter 17 glacial and Periglacial Landscapes 567
visualanalysis 17 Glacial Processes and Landforms
These August 2013 photos show glaciers located along the coast of Svalbard, Norway, at 80.5° N latitude. The water body in the foreground of each photo is the Arctic Ocean. Study the character of the ice, the adjacent landforms, and the overall setting in both photos. Twenty years ago, glacial ice covered most of this landscape and formed shelves off both coastlines.
1. What type of glacier is shown in each photo- graph? (For example, a cirque glacier?
Or another type of glacier?)
2. in the upper photo, what characteristic of the ice indicates glacial movement toward the sea?
3. What processes related to climatic warming are potentially affecting the mass balance of these glaciers? Based on your observation, would you say that these glaciers are advancing or retreat- ing? explain.
4. What glacial landforms can you identify in the photographs?
