This still from the spectacularly good Academy Award–winning film Amadeus (1985) shows “Mozart” composing at a billiard table. Mozart did in fact keep a billiard table in his bedroom. But in most other ways, the portrayal of Mozart in Amadeus is largely fictitious. Mozart was not an irre- sponsible idiot-savant who died penniless, but a highly intelligent entrepreneur whose income fluctuated wildly from year to year; moreover, he was not poisoned by his rival, composer Antonio Salieri (1750–1825). But Amadeus does pose an intriguing question: What does a mediocre or even somewhat gifted person (Salieri) do when faced with an absolute genius (Mozart)?
