Notice in the duet that the intervals of time between the voices get shorter and shorter, suggesting that they are physically coming closer and closer together.

In the end, the frightful ghost of the dead Commandant confronts Don Giovanni and orders him to repent. Ever defiant, Don Giovanni cries, “No, no,” and is dragged down to Hell to the sounds of Mozart’s most demonic music. In sum, the mixture of divine beauty and sinister power—the heavenly and the hellish—makes Don Giovanni a masterpiece of the highest order. No wonder Andrew Lloyd Webber (see Figure 9.10) paid homage to it in his long-running Phantom of the Opera.
