Jan S. Hansen: Untitled, 2010. Mixed media on wood, xx x xx cm.
As a visual artist, Jan S. Hansen works conceptually with several different media and expressions. Today, he is particularly recognized for his installations that create atmospheres, environments, and surprising scenarios the viewer can step into. In addition to his installations and sculptures, Jan S. Hansen has also created many paintings, including Untitled. The painting is a portrait format of a bearded man who looks directly out at the viewer and has an angry, concentrated gaze. He is painted on a background that forms an abstract image space, where a series of words, symbols,
and lines mimic a newspaper page. Jan S. Hansen’s artistic practice has the human condition as its starting point. Here, he examines the human’s place in the world, its conditions in a technologically oriented age and its existential challenges in relation to climate. With this thematic starting point, it is precisely the many different media that comment on and identify Jan S. Hansen’s artistic studies.
Jan S. Hansen (1980 DK) studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He has, among other things, exhibited at Huset for Kunst og Design, DK; Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, DK and Kunsthal Nord, DK. Jan S. Hansen is co-founder of the artist-run exhibition space Simian in Copenhagen..
