Andy Kassler: Close your eyes and see, 2022.
Sand engraved mirror and LED panel. 200 x 80 cm. Edition of 3 + 1 AP.
Andy Kassler works conceptually with self-staging. In 2013, he created an alter ego carrying his name, and today, it functions as an artistic starting point where he critically investigates questions about the terms of late capitalism. An ironic and aesthetic gaze on parameters such as success, economy, social status, and masculinity. His work draws on installations, performances, and digital platforms such as Instagram, where he continuously works with his persona in a social context. Close your eyes and see offers a room for contemplation and a linguistic paradox. The sentence addresses the viewer who sees his own reflection in the work and a message on how to seek inner insight. The mirror incorporates the viewer, whose reflection is now staged by Andy Kassler. At the same time, the work brings humoristic dynamics into play by highlighting the actual act of seeing, which is a factor that is often controlling in the meeting with an artwork.
Andy Kassler (1989, DE) studied at The Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. He has exhibited his works at Saatchi Gallery, UK; The Photographers Gallery, Museum der Bildenden Künste, DE; UK; König Galerie, DE; Eigen + Art, DE; Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, DE; Fotomuseum Winterthur, CH, and Alice Folker Gallery, DK.
