living in Dorset, Devon and, finally, Wiltshire. He is survived by his wife, three daughters (Suzanna, Nicola and Lara) and six grandchildren.”

D.J. Kelsall (B)
died 23rd January 2017.
Gordon Lindsay Jones (Sn) died in January 2018.
Ioan Thomas (Honorary OO) writes: “Oundle School became a major feature of Gordon’s life. He came to Oundle via an entrance scholarship for the School and left having been awarded a scholarship by King’s College, Cambridge. Further academic success followed with a first-class in both parts of the Tripos and then a PhD in Nuclear Physics after study at the Cavendish Laboratory.
“From Cambridge, Gordon joined the staff at Clifton College. He had the challenge of teaching John Cleese, who obtained an A level in Physics.
“In 1958 he was appointed Head of Physics at Oundle. Able pupils enjoyed the speed, precision and imagination of his thinking, but some others probably found it difficult to keep pace with him. Being Head of the Department did not entirely suit him.
“Out of School, cross-country running became a major interest. He organised competitions in four other schools and compiled the results in meticulous detail, so that they could be announced as soon as the last runner came in.
“After retiring in 1986, Gordon moved to his home area near Stockport, where hewasabletogivealotofhelptoone of the local tennis clubs – where he and his contemporaries continued to play while they were in their 70s.
“Sadly, as he got older, he did not keep up contact with people at Oundle and no longer came to donors’ events or others at the School. He found he was often frustrated when journeys by car meant that his plans could not keep to the expected times if he was behind a slow tractor.
“We heard from King’s College that he died in the early weeks of 2018, shortly before his 89th birthday.”
1948
Douglas Fawkner (Sc) died 9th February 2018.
His wife, Penelope, writes: “Douglas was in School House from 1944 to 1948. His older brother, Ian, two years his senior, was also in School House. Douglas was very keen on tennis and athletics, and was part of the team who won the cross- country cup for his House.
“On leaving Oundle, Douglas trained as a dental surgeon at Guy’s Hospital, London, qualifying in 1954. He then became a Captain in the Royal Army Dental Corps for his two years of National Service, serving in the Canal Zone in Egypt, Jordan and Libya.
“On his return to the UK, he worked as an assistant dental surgeon in Sevenoaks before setting up his own practice in Beckenham, Kent. In 1968 he joined the Community Dental Service in East Sussex. Following this, he did further training in orthodontics at Cardiff Dental Hospital, gaining the D.Orth. qualification in 1974. He then joined
Bristol and Avon Community Service as a senior dental officer. The last 10 years of his career were spent as an orthodontic adviser at the Dental Practice Board in Eastbourne before his retirement in 1996. He ran several half- marathons in Taunton and Eastbourne during this time.
“He had a long and active retirement pursuing numerous hobbies. One of these was learning to play the drums. Once he became reasonably competent, he decided to form a small group and they went on to perform at local hotels and clubs. He was also an excellent artist, mainly painting portraits, and was a member of Bexhill Art Society. Another interest was singing and acting with Bexhill Light Operatic Society, and he played several small parts including Herr Zeller in The Sound of Music and the Captain in Anything Goes. He also built a Gauge 1 model locomotive and had a track round the garden, much enjoyed by his grandchildren.
“Douglas and I married in 1963, and had two children, Robert and Kate. We now have six grandchildren ranging in age from 21 to four.
“Douglas had a stroke in 2014, which left him with some speech and memory problems, though luckily no paralysis. Then, a year later, following a hip replacement, he started to develop vascular dementia, which made life very difficult for him, as he found it hard to communicate, especially in the last few months. He died peacefully at home shortly before his 88th birthday and our 55th wedding anniversary.”
