 GIRLS’ FOOTBALL FIRST
For the first time in 462 years Oundle fielded a girls’ football team in an inaugural fixture against Stamford High School for Girls in early February and they marked the occasion with a resounding 4-1 win, with Faridah Sarumi (W) scoring a hat-trick.
VIOLET’S CHAMPION DISPLAY
With her thoroughbred pony, Miss
Wonderful, Violet Barton (K) was crowned Midlands champion in this season's point-to-point series. At the Melton Hunt Club Point-to-Point, Violet was presented with the Midlands Area Leading Pony Racing Rider Award.
FIRST FISHER PRIZE-WINNERS
Miranda Joicey (W) (pictured below with Head Sarah Kerr-Dineen) and Toby Learoyd (F) were the first recipients of the Fisher Brothers’ Cross-Country
Prizes, to be awarded annually to the winners of the senior boys’ and girls’ races.
The prizes were set up by Bill Fisher (B
75), who won the boys’ race three times (1973, 1974 and 1975), while his brothers – Mike (B 73) and Adrian (B 69) – won it once apiece, Adrian in 1969 and Mike jointly with Bill in 1973. Bill wishes to celebrate and encourage School running and its athletes.
UNBEATEN 1st XI CRICKET
The School’s boys’ cricket 1st XI enjoyed their first unbeaten season since 2004, with most credit going to captain Simon Fernandes (Ldr) for leading the team brilliantly, keeping wicket superbly and for scoring many runs.
Will de Capell Brooke (L) achieved the major honour of playing for the 1st XI while still in the Third Form.
MATILDA’S GB SELECTION
Matilda Lanni (L2) returned a clear round on Newbridges Master Brown to help Britain win the U18 equestrian
event in Austria in May. In 2017 she won a European U14 team gold medal.
OUNDLE BADMINTON HISTORY
For the first time in Oundle history, two badminton players – Daphne Ngan (N) and Brian Cheng (C) – represented Northamptonshire at U17 level, winning the only games for the county on their debuts.
Brian and TC Cheah (Ldr) also reached the semi-finals of the county U19 boys’ singles, while Daphne won the girls’ U19 event and was runner-up in the senior county championship.
MARATHON SUCCESS
Two Oundelians – Tom Ritson (Sc) and Dylan Page (F) – ran in the hottest London Marathon on record in April,
with Dylan raising nearly £2,000 for Mencap.
ATHLETE ARCHIE STARS
Archie Parkinson (L) enjoyed a highly successful athletics season in 2017, rising to third in the national 3,000 metres U15 rankings and 16th in the 1500m list.
Last year Archie won the county schools’ 1500m, came second in the Mason Trophy and broke a club record competing in the English Schools event, where he was placed 11th.
He also won the U15 county 3,000m and U15 Midlands 3,000m Championship, and came third in the U15 National 3,000m Championship. Archie’s personal best time of 4min 12.71sec in the 1500m knocked 16 seconds off the School record.
