5. Exponents
 An Exponent of ‘a’ is the number of times ‘a’ is multiplied by itself. It’s represented by ab, where b is the power of the exponent.
For example
a5 = a × a × a × a × a
where ‘a’ is the base, and ‘5’ is the power. Here, ‘a’ is raised to the fifth power.
5.1. Laws of Exponents
x0 = 1
x1 = x
mn (m+n) x .x = x
(xy)n = xn yn (xm)n = xmn
xm =x(m–n) xn
x-n = 1 xn
Exponent value of a negative number is negative when the power is odd.
Exponent value of a negative number is positive when the power is even.
80 = 1
81 = 8
35 (3+5) 8 2 .2 = 2 = 2
(2×3)3 = 23×33 (22)4 = 28
43 ÷42=41
2-2=1 22
(–4)3 = –64 (–4)2 = 16
