Order of operations
When you come across multiple operations like parenthesis, addition, exponents, subtraction, multiplication, and division in a single problem, the order of operation is as given below:
• Parenthesis
• Exponents or roots
• Multiplication or division ( start with the one which comes first, left to right)
• Addition or subtraction ( start with the one which comes first, left to right)
Worked Example 15
Evaluate
Solution:
= 12
7+5×4-42 +(5–2)÷3
= 7 + 5 × 4 - 42 + (3) ÷ 3 =7 + 5 × 4 - 16 + (3) ÷ 3
= 7 + 20 - 16 + (3) ÷ 3 = 7 + 20 - 16 + 1
=27 - 16 + 1
= 11 + 1
solve the parenthesis solve the exponents multiplication left to right division left to right addition left to right subtraction left to right
REMEMBER:
You can remember the order of operation using PEMDAS technique OR
You can even remember is as Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Where,
P = parenthesis
E = exponents
M= multiplication D = division
A = addition
S = subtraction
Modulus or Absolute value of a real number
The modulus of a number is defined as follows: |a|={ 𝑎, 𝑖𝑓𝑎>0
−𝑎, 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 < 0
Therefore,
|7| = 7 and |-7| = - (-7) = 7
