My Artist’s Shoes
Sami Goodman
It was like any other Wednesday
Sitting in the lab
I was explaining an Excel spreadsheet to the girl who usually sits across from me
She had moved closer to listen
There was a lull in the math and she looked at me and asked a question I will never forget
Are you an artist? she says
I didn’t know what to say
In that moment with my perfectly compartmentalized scientist mask in place I didn’t feel like an artist
I couldn’t tell her because in that moment I didn’t know myself
