On the 29 May 2009, 55 false killer whales swam ashore at Kommetjie beach in Cape Town. The public swamped the beach in an attempt to keep the beached whales alive, but before the sun set all the whales had been shot dead by authorities in a bid to end their suffering. This tragic event is the starting point for a film which delves into the events of that fateful day and also examines the worldwide phenomenon of why cetaceans beach.

Around 7,000 herons live permanently in Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. Most people don’t have any problem with these long-legged thieves, but if you run a fast food restaurant or live next door to the lady who feeds them each day, then these birds can become quite a nuisance. Streetwise opens up the floor to both their supporters and their opponents.

Snakes are a feature of nearly every culture in the world. 100,000 people die every year because of them. But we also owe our survival to snake predation on rodents. They attract a mythology which sometimes leaves the truth in its dust, but in reality, snakes are some of the most highly adapted animals on Earth. This is a celebration of the best and weirdest aspects of the wonderful world of snakes.
A long-haired, primeval-looking creature is making its way through some of Namibia’s most spectacular landscapes, from the Skeleton coast right across the desert. We follow a particular rare brown hyena called Tosca, and it’s her clan which field scientist Ingrid Wiesel has focused on for many years, aiming for a deeper insight into the secret life of this most unusual predator.

Deep in the heart of Sumatra’s Jambi region a hunt is on. In 2010, eight Indonesians were murdered in the forest and the killer is still at large. Of the eight victims, seven have been partially eaten. What creature counts humans as a food source? A 300lb Sumatran tiger.

Tremendously tall or ridiculously small. Meet giant birds that can’t fly and even bigger mammals that defy gravity. There is the brush turkey with its outrageously large feet – and the obscure – giant African bullfrogs challenging each other for their offspring! En masse, termites become fierce defenders, schools of anchovies become impenetrable and we find out that much on Earth that appears gigantic is made up or nourished by the smallest of the small.
